JANANI VIKRAMAN

I believe engineering holds the key to solving many of the critical challenges our world faces today—especially in creating affordable, sustainable housing and infrastructure.

With a strong academic foundation—Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering, Master’s in Structural Engineering, and a Master of Science in International Planning and Urban Design—I’ve spent the last 10+ years immersed in teaching, industry, and research.

My journey in academia provided opportunities to collaborate with architects and students on projects focused on sustainability and green environments, which deepened my understanding of how thoughtful design impacts lives. I’ve witnessed firsthand the struggles faced by communities due to poor planning and inadequate infrastructure. These experiences ignited my passion for urban design and inspired me to pursue it at a professional level, with the goal of shaping cities that are inclusive, resilient, and future-ready.

I’m committed to continuous learning and self-improvement. I believe there’s no substitute for hard work and am always striving to turn my weaknesses into strengths. Passionate about bridging the gap between civil engineering and architecture, my research focuses on sustainable design and planning of the built environment.

As I move forward in my PhD journey at the University of South Wales, my mission is to contribute meaningfully to the evolution of our cities—creating spaces that are not only functional but also environmentally responsible and socially empowering.
