Project Overview
To match the historic grandeur and epic narrative of Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan 2, the set design for the audio launch was envisioned as a regal stage installation inspired by Chola architecture, temple façades, and royal court drama. Held indoors, the immersive set transformed the venue into a cinematic palace—honoring the legendary story while embracing modern stagecraft.
Designed by JB & KM Structural Consultants and Designers, the space captured the cultural depth, drama, and emotion of Kalki’s universe with a structure that was both theatrical and historically resonant.
Design Highlights
- Palatial Façade: A full-width classical elevation modeled on Chola palaces, featuring arched colonnades, carved balconies, and dramatic porticos.
- Central Cinematic Reveal: Giant portrait banners and the PS-2 logo take center stage beneath maroon royal drapes, crowned by a traditional chandelier.
- Balcony and Depth Play: Realistic three-tiered balconies allow for dramatic appearances and lighting illusions, creating immersive depth and grandeur.
- Art Panels & Characters: The façade showcases key characters through custom-illustrated panels and theatrical spotlighting, immersing the audience in the film’s world.
- Stepway Stage Access: A majestic staircase guides artists and performers into the spotlight, while subtle underlighting enhances procession sequences.
Design Statement
“The PS-2 audio launch stage was crafted as a tribute to royal legacy—where history meets performance. Inspired by ancient South Indian palatial architecture and theatrical opera sets, the design creates a world that honors the cultural gravity of the Ponniyin Selvan saga. Every texture, arch, and light source was designed to tell a story before a single word was spoken.”
